Bhramari Pranayama⏱ 4:30

Bhramari is derived from bhramara which means black bee. During the practice of this Pranayama the sound produced resembles the buzzing of a black bee.

  1. Find a comfortable seated position: Sit in a cross-legged position on the floor or on a cushion, or you can sit on a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Ensure that your spine is erect and your body is relaxed.
  2. Close your eyes: Gently close your eyes to help you focus inward and block out external distractions.
  3. Relax your facial muscles: Allow your face and jaw to relax completely. Soften your forehead, eyes, and mouth.
  4. Take a deep breath in: Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling your lungs with air. Feel your abdomen and chest expanding as you breathe in.
  5. Exhale with a humming sound: As you exhale, press your index fingers lightly against your ear openings to partially close them. Then, gently close your lips and make a soft humming sound like that of a bee. Keep the sound smooth and continuous throughout the exhalation. The sound should resonate in your head.
  6. Continue the cycle: After completing the exhalation, keep your fingers pressed against your ears for a moment, and then release them. Take a natural breath in through your nose and repeat the process, focusing on the humming sound during each exhalation.
  7. Practice for several rounds: Start with 5-10 rounds of Bhramari Pranayama and gradually increase the number of rounds as you become comfortable with the practice. You can aim to practice for 5-10 minutes initially and extend the duration as desired.
  8. Observe the effects: After you finish the practice, sit quietly for a few moments with your eyes closed. Observe any sensations or changes in your body and mind. You may notice a sense of calmness and relaxation.
  • Stress reduction: The gentle humming sound produced during the exhalation in Bhramari Pranayama helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's relaxation response. This can help reduce stress, anxiety, and promote a sense of calmness.
  • Anxiety and depression management: Regular practice of Bhramari Pranayama has been found to be beneficial for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression. The deep exhalation and the focus on the humming sound can help quiet the mind, improve mental clarity, and uplift the mood.
